Found: The Forgotten Things
February 1, 2009
I stumbled on the work of ken flett and amy rubin flett on etsy: artists who make pieces about “people and their stories; animals and what they can teach us; and forgotten moments that make life so magical. “ Now they’ve teamed up for the forgotten things.
Not only do they make very cool stuff, they’ve introduced me to a word that is already changing my life: Bricolage.
/ˌbriːkoʊˈlɑːʒ/, /ˌbrɪkoʊˈlɑːʒ/visual arts and literature, to refer to:French word bricolage, from the verb bricoler – the core meaning in French being, “fiddle, tinker” and, by extension, “make creative and resourceful use of whatever materials are to hand (regardless of their original purpose).” is a term used in several disciplines, among them the
- the construction or creation of a work from a diverse range of things which happen to be available;
- a work created by such a process.
It is borrowed from the French word bricolage, from the verb bricoler – the core meaning in French being, “fiddle, tinker” and, by extension, “make creative and resourceful use of whatever materials are to hand (regardless of their original purpose).”
A person who engages in bricolage is a bricoleur.
I am a bricoleur. Cool.
Gotta go do some bricolage now.
(the pics? yup, two pieces from theforgottenthings … pretty great, eh?)
Women Martyrs to the Faith
October 3, 2008
Yup, another collage for the challenge group Gothic Arches.
How it usually works: each Sunday a group member comes up with a theme, and members post their project (using mediums that contain rubberstamping, collage, vintage photos, whatever) on their online blog/journal/ picturetrail/flickr…
This week there is no official theme, so I chose a theme from Orthodox Christianity.
The words are from descriptions of the lives of women martyrs to the faith and I arranged them, chose font and colors, etc., using wordle.
Favorite Movie: Gregory’s Girl
September 27, 2008
Here’s another collage for Gothic Arches, the group where folks share collages featuring this shape. Each Sunday a group member comes up with a theme, and members post their project (using mediums that contain rubberstamping, collage, vintage photos, whatever) on their online blog/journal/ picturetrail/flickr…
The theme for this week is ‘Favorite Movie.’ One of my absolute favorites is “Gregory’s Girl,” directed by Bill Forsyth. His film “Local Hero” is another favorite of mine.
